The BOREAL drone ready for international airspace

BOREAL has become the first French drone under 25 kg authorized to operate in international airspace under the new regulations. This milestone is the result of technical and operational measures implemented by the teams, combined with an operating authorization for national airspace issued by the DSAC. Among the technical measures is the verification of the integration of a TSO-certified transponder on board the BOREAL, carried out by AEROTEC & CONCEPT.

Our teams are proud to have been granted, by the DSAC, the necessary operating authorization and aircraft station license to conduct safe flights from Guadeloupe to beyond 50 nautical miles offshore, within international airspace. This is a first for a French fixed-wing drone under 25 kg, made possible by the successful integration and demonstration of its Mode S TSO-certified transponder.

This transponder, essential for the identification and tracking of aircraft in flight, had to demonstrate full operational reliability to ensure safe navigation. Previously reserved for manned aircraft, such equipment must meet very strict standards for accuracy, reliability, and compatibility with air traffic surveillance systems.

The demonstration was based on demanding compliance tests conducted by AEROTEC & CONCEPT company, a major player in aircraft modification and maintenance. As a specialist in the certification of aeronautical equipment, their production site in Graulhet (Tarn) supported the BOREAL teams by applying rigorous protocols equivalent to those for manned aircraft, ensuring an optimal level of standards.

With this authorization, the BOREAL teams are now preparing for a flight campaign off the coast of Guadeloupe. This carefully planned mission will offer an opportunity to fully leverage the drone’s performance in a challenging maritime environment.

This achievement paves the way for even more ambitious international missions. From maritime surveillance to Earth observation, the BOREAL drone is confirming its key role in operations across remote areas!
