M3 Systems Belgium , sister company of BOREAL SAS, is a member of the consortium of the European PASSport project aiming to design a solution based on fixed / rotary wing drones and submarines to improve safety and security in port areas.
The need stems from Directive 2005/65/EC requiring the completion of surveillance systems for the entire port area, in order to improve the safety and security of daily operations there (about a thousand European ports fall within the scope application of this directive).
The proposed solution is intended to complement the platforms already operational by extending the surveillance perimeter using a fleet of drones.
to provide innovation and operational support to the recognition, management and analysis of the safety and security aspects of daily operations with particular attention to:
- Pollution monitoring (safety)
- Support for electronic navigation (safety)
- Protection of critical buildings / infrastructures (security)
- Protection against uncooperative small craft approaching port areas (security)
- Underwater Threat Monitoring (Security)
The project should lead to a marketable product based on the novelty represented by the use of a fleet of semi-automated drones integrating Galileo services (and other sensors) for safe guidance, navigation and control (GNC) and effective, even in a harsh environment, in the presence of obstacles – including buildings and other ground assets – and potentially adverse weather conditions.
M3 Systems Belgium will be in charge of integrating a BOREAL ISR drone for the demonstration required in a French port. In addition to the ISR payload, it is also planned to perform GNSS IQ collection for GNSS signal quality assessment for port applications.
